Bryce begins to develop feelings for Juli, who begins to have mixed feelings about him. Chet gets to know Juli while helping her work on her lawn. Her father, Richard, gives her a painting of the tree as a memento, making her feel a little better. She becomes very depressed afterward, as the tree lets her see the world in a more enlightened way. One day, it's cut down by a group of landscapers so a house can be built there, despite Juli's opposition. There's a large, old sycamore tree that Juli loves, which no one understands. In 1963, Bryce's grandfather Chet Duncan moved in with the family. After finding out Bryce and Sherry broke up, she thought she could have Bryce back. From Juli's perspective, Bryce returned her feelings, but was shy. Bryce's best friend, Garrett, takes an interest in Sherry and tells her the truth about Bryce asking her out she doesn't take it well. By the sixth grade, Bryce tries to get rid of Juli by dating Sherry Stalls, whom Juli despises. In 1957, when second-graders Bryce Loski and Julianna "Juli" Baker first meet, Juli knows it's love, but Bryce isn't so sure, and tries to avoid Juli. She is mostly seen wearing dresses and has her hair either up in a ponytail or let loose and pushed back with a hairband. Julie has light gingery brown hair and greyish brown eyes. (Okay-that last part is also motivated by her crush on Bryce, but it's still pretty nice of her.) She's also very smart. Juli sure is one kind-hearted girl-she's always trying to make her parents happy, she's the best mama around to her little chicks, and she's even sweet enough to give away her eggs to the Loskis.
